We went about capturing this company’s energetic, vibrant culture by ripping up the rulebook and finding bespoke solutions. An open-plan, stripped-down, non-conformist environment was completed with popcorn machines, exposed concrete, face brick and the absence of any formal reception. And we took it a step further by getting involved beyond our scope, ironing out inherited building issues and, in so doing, forging an ongoing relationship. Despite some very real challenges that needed careful navigation, we built a strong relationship based on unwavering faith, substantially enhancing the site and making our client smile. Our brief was to reflect the rich artistic traditions of different South African tribal cultures, and we built on this in nuanced, unusual ways, lighting the lodge entirely with candles and traditional oil lanterns, collaborating with local artists and using porcupine quills and Ndebele beadwork as finishing touches. The resultant atmosphere is magical and transformative, creating a real connection with the surrounding landscape. With no ‘as built’ drawings to work from, we were challenged to modernise the structure, which we achieved with seamless cross-level flow highlighted by raw, natural finishes and an intriguing range of texture and colour accents. The result: an environment no occupant could ever get bored of. Catering to a diverse range of travellers, including important government officials, this space needed to be both flexible and functional, and we achieved this with arresting standout features like client business hot desks and exclusive VVIP rest areas. Our intense, upfront strategic planning facilitated a more efficient site move, resulting in the ideal operating structure for the legal environment. From here the project was brought to life with everything from rigorous colour research to optimised space planning and the construction of an acoustically perfect three-sided glass auditorium. Once completed, we had created a timeless style that captured this law firm’s rich heritage while giving it a refreshed, iconic facelift. Out-of-the-box thinking was essential in creating a luxurious, sophisticated space that could also house a functional operations area. This was achieved by juxtaposing modern finishes with vintage pieces and striking artworks, resulting in a warm, visually rich environment that perfectly positioned this thriving new business. We got involved, turning a canteen into a café, balancing different tastes and dynamics, and finding ways to ensure that all staff were invested in, and proud of, their offices.
